Thirty Days Guest Blogger Series : The World’s Best Ever
- April 30, 2010
Every Friday we choose a blog or blogger that we think is making an impact on the world of arts and culture, and bring them on board to guest curate the site for a day. This week we welcome the multi-layered insight of our friends at The World’s Best Ever.
The World’s Best Ever Picks: Tat Ito
- April 30, 2010
Tat Ito’s work is just plain fun. The Queens-based, Japanese artist paints the craziest miniature worlds that encourage your eye to wander around endlessly. There are Army men carrying super-soakers, herds of zombies lost and confused, in another work tiny people are rolling logs down a river surrounded by polka dots on gold metal leaf. The expanse of Tat Ito’s imagination and creativity is what makes him one of our favorites.
The World’s Best Ever Picks: Eric Beltz
- April 30, 2010
Eric Beltz is the kind of artist who takes a year to finish one piece. It’s not that he works slowly, it’s just that Beltz is detailed, focused, and completely obsessed. Based in Santa Barbara, Beltz’s preferred medium is graphite and it is in this limiting palette that he finds his inspiration. He says, “I can’t just add a splash of red to give visual interest to something. I have to think about more basic qualities of composition and value contrast.” The grayscale carries on to his domestic life as well. Case in point, his dogs: “I have three Schnauzers: black, middle gray, and white. Obsessions drive my experience and inform my decisions.” The devil is in the details.
The World’s Best Ever Picks: Faile
- April 30, 2010
Watching the evolution of Faile has been pure enjoyment. From working on the streets of New York to the side of a museum, the Brooklyn-based artist duo has been comfortable mixing it up. Most recently, Faile have been hard at work on the second part of a new series of work; an Interactive Art Arcade (this one in Lower East Side). Deluxx Fluxx consists of original arcade machines but, in lieu of traditional games, the machines are filled with Interactive Video Art accompanied by the vibrant sounds produced by Seth Jabour of Les Savy Fav. Each machine, painted and adorned with classic Faile imagery is its own sculpture. Your goal in this arcade is not victory, only total engagement.
The World’s Best Ever Picks: ruedione
- April 30, 2010
ruedione’s photographs make you feel like you’re part of the adventure. Once an avid graffiti artist, ruedi returned to the craft not as a painter but, as a documentarian. Capturing the risk and energy involved in night missions, ruediones’s photographs show dedication to the craft of photography. Over the course of six years, he was able to complete the series BACKFLASHES from which these images were taken.
